According to a 2001 Harris survey, six in 10 Americans
(59 percent) take dietary food supplements on a regular basis. Their main
reasons for taking them were: to feel better (72 percent), to help prevent
getting sick (67 percent), or to live longer (50 percent).1 Since our
skin is the organ that is under the heaviest attack from external forces such as
UV rays, chemicals, and pollutants (and our most visible sign of aging),
shouldn't we take extra effort to protect it as well?
Formulated
with a network of 11 antioxidants, VitaOx
Complex® is a topical
vitamin and antioxidant supplement that effectively controls free
radicals,
reduces skin damage, and maintains skin's youthful vitality. It is
a daily use skin care product that is designed to protect and repair
your skin while leaving it looking and feeling great.
Our skin serves as a protective wall between our
bodies and the environment. Rising skin cancer rates, a serious indicator of
skin damage, indicate sunscreens may not be protecting us as much as they should
be. Chemicals, pollution, sun exposure, additives, and even stress (to name a
few) generate oxidants which damage our cells and form "free
radicals".
What are free radicals?
Simply put, a free radical is a molecule with an
unpaired electron, seeking to strip an electron from another molecule and thus
having the capacity to damage vital compounds such as lipids and proteins. It
is the over-production of these free radicals that cause damage to our bodies.
Wrinkling, thinning skin and discoloration are symptoms common to free radical
destruction. The same oxidative process also causes oils to become rancid,
peeled apples to turn brown, and iron to rust.
Only
antioxidants can control free radicals, making the difference
between healthy and diseased tissues and influencing how
fast and how well we age.
VitaOx Complex is
designed to supply antioxidants and nutrients directly to our skin for optimal
repair and protection of this vital organ from free radical damage.
What are
antioxidants and how do they fight free radicals?
Antioxidants fight free radicals,
and the damage that they can cause to our bodies. They go hunting for free
radicals to neutralize. Their purpose is to give up an electron to the free
radical in order to render the free radical harmless. But in the process, the
antioxidant itself becomes a weak free radical. Fortunately, if other
antioxidants are present, the original electron donor can be
"regenerated," or restored to its antioxidant state. Having numerous
antioxidants in place to take advantage of this restoration process is a key
component of VitaOx.
VitaOx Complex is
formulated with not just one or two antioxidants but with a network of 11
powerful antioxidants. When used together, the antioxidant power is equal to
more than the sum of its parts.
Why is the antioxidant network in VitaOx important?
The primary job of the antioxidant network is to
prevent antioxidants from being lost. Normally, when an antioxidant attacks
and neutralizes a free radical, the antioxidant benefit to that particular
cell is depleted, and it even turns into a harmless free radical itself.
However, with the proper teaming of antioxidants into a network, this new free
radical is neutralized and regenerated back into a productive antioxidant able
to go out and scavenge for free radicals again. Antioxidants in a network can
greatly enhance the power of one another to fight free radicals.
Can topical antioxidants really protect and repair our
skin?
Yes, there is a growing amount of evidence
showing that topically applied antioxidants can protect and repair the skin
both before and after sun exposure.
Before Sun Exposure: According
to a 2001 University of California Department of Dermatology publication,
human studies have convincingly demonstrated that topical antioxidants protect
the skin from sun damage when applied before sun exposure. The publication
concluded that regular application of skin care products containing
antioxidants may be of the utmost benefit in protecting our skin from
oxidation. 2
After Sun Exposure:
According to a news release in 2002 by the American Academy of Dermatology;
the antioxidants Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Selenium have been proven to
decrease the effect of the sun on the skin and actually prevent further
damage. The study cited in this news release indicated that applying topical
vitamin C to human skin 15 to 30 minutes after UV exposure decreased sunburn
cells and began repairing the damaged skin. It also mentioned that topical
natural vitamin E was found to reduce the production of: sunburn cells,
chronic UV-induced damage, and cancer causing cells. 3
Summary: The
2001 University of California Department of Dermatology publication concluded
that regular application of skin care products containing antioxidants may be of
the utmost benefit in protecting our skin from oxidation. 2

- The Harris survey was conducted by phone
from June 28 through July 1, 2001. Interviews were completed among
1,027 Americans using an unrestricted Random Digit Dialing technique
that significantly reduces serial bias and ensures that both listed
and unlisted numbers are reached. Only one interview was conducted per
household.
